Conditions for Which Therapy is Necessary
Depression can be a mild feeling of being blue or it can be terribly debilitating, in which even basic functioning is beyond the person’s ability to accomplish. When a mild feeling of being blue occurs, sometimes it goes away by itself and is often dependent on what is occurring in the person’s life. But when it doesn’t go away by itself, therapy can help. When it is more severe, it may require a combination of psychiatric medication prescribed by a psychiatrist and psychotherapy. This combination usually helps to alleviate the symptoms and allows the person to gradually resume a normal life.
Anxiety can occur as the result of a threatening or scary experience, or sometimes it occurs without any specific cause. Some people suffer from anxiety as a matter of course. In both cases, therapy can help. At times, it may be necessary for a consult with a psychiatrist in order to get anti-anxiety medications, in conjunction with therapy.
Physical Disabilities often cause emotional issues, including difficulties in functioning and independence; a feeling of social isolation; the need to exert greater effort in studying; the need to learn basic social skills in more concrete ways, as imitation often is less feasible for people with physical disabilities, and often causes other emotional issues that need to be dealt with in therapy, such as feelings of inferiority, behavioral problems, etc.
Cognitive Disabilities often require intensive therapy. There are frequent behavioral issues, there are myriad functions that need to be taught where in normal functioning people, these functions are learned almost automatically. Further, many people with cognitive disabilities have emotional issues requiring therapy, such as anxiety, depression, impulsivity, etc.
Do you ever feel anxiety when there is no obvious reason for it? Does it affect your mood, concentration, sleep, appetite, relationships? Has this ever happened to you after having experienced a difficult, fearful event? In all cases, anxiety is very debilitating. Anxiety often does not remain static, but begins affecting your life in ever-advancing ways. It can cause you to avoid a certain place, and later avoid a second and a third, etc., until you may remain mostly at home in order not to feel the anxiety. Anxiety may cause problems with any and/or all of the above mentioned issues.
Do you ever feel down? Does it last more than just a few hours? Do you lose interest in things you normally enjoy? Does it affect your appetite, either decreasing or increasing it? Are you sad more than any given situation would warrant? Do you disconnect from people close to you? Depression can be very debilitating. You may have a slight feeling of depressed mood or a heavy feeling of hopelessness. Depression affects your mood, enjoyment of life, work and/or school, appetite, relationships, general functioning, and ability to take control of your life. It can even lead to suicidal thoughts.
Do you have a physical disability? Does it impact your ability to function as independently as your age would normally permit? Does it affect you socially, educationally, vocationally, financially, and interpersonally? Those of you with physical disabilities have multiple emotional issues. Among these issues may be: Feelings of inferiority; Feelings of being different; Wanting to be accepted but feeling rejected; The discomfort when people stare when the disability is apparent; Feelings of social isolation; Being the object of people's pity; Having low expectations both of yourself and by others.
Are you a caregiver for a person with one of the following issues? Mental retardation; Borderline intelligence; Autism; Do any of the above issues impact the person's ability to function as indepently at his abilities allow? Does it affect him/her socially, educationally, vocationally, financially, emotionally, behaviorally and interpersonally?
