Therapy for Trauma
There are many causes of trauma, as there are many types of trauma. Among the symptoms of all types of trauma are difficulties in sleeping, changes in appetite, nightmares, mood fluctuations, difficulties in work/school, nervousness, avoidance of people, places, and other stimuli that remind one of the traumatic experience, and flashbacks.
As the result of a Traumatic Experience, many people develop symptoms due to the trauma. This traumatic experience can be an accident, a scary situation, observing someone else suffering from a traumatic experience, a threatening experience, being attacked verbally and/or physically, etc.
Complex Trauma can develop as the result of ongoing traumatic experiences, such as ongoing abuse and/or neglect, a series of traumatic experiences, ongoing threatening experiences, etc. The result of complex trauma is quite pervasive, affecting mood, behavior, sleep, appetite, ability to attend to task, avoidance of everything that arouses the feelings of anxiety, etc.
Medical Trauma is often triggered upon the diagnosis of a medical problem requiring care. If the medical issue is chronic, then the traumatic feelings will obviously be more pronounced. The same symptoms as described above occur also with medical trauma.
Trauma as the Result of Experiencing a Terror Attack is extremely difficult to deal with. Everyone knows that the planned purpose of the attack was to kill the person. All traumatic symptoms often occur as the result of this type of trauma. The experiencing of the attack could be both from having been directly involved or having witnessed or having observed such an attack. People have reported developing this type of trauma just from watching an attack occur even on TV, completely removed from the reality of the person at that moment.
Military Trauma (Shell Shock) often develops when a soldier endures battle experiences during a military conflict. The need to feel “distance” from the event is palpable. The same emotional issues arise in this type of trauma as in all the other types described below.
Have you or a loved one ever had an experience that caused traumatic feelings? Or have you or a loved one witnessed such a traumatic experience? Examples of one-time traumatic experiences include: Accidents; Attacks; Humiliating Experiences; Break-Ins. When you are involved in a tramatic experience, often traumatic feelings accompany the episode. First of all, the experience was sudden, with no time to prepare. Also, there is damage. You may be injured. You may have pain, and/or require hospitalization, rehabilitation, and treatments. You may even have chronic health and medical problems arising from the experience. Or if you only witnessed such a event, the traumatic feelings may still occur.
Therapy For Complex Trauma: Ongoing abuse and neglect or multiple traumatic experiences may cause complex trauma and complex post-traumatic stress disorder. Worsening symptoms may be a result of avoiding the memories and feelings of the traumatic experiences. This type of trauma may affect you cognitively, emotionally, in relationships, and behaviorally. Unless treated, it can cause you great disturbance in most areas of functioning. In complex trauma, there are often disturbances of: Sleep; Appetite; Moods; Memory and concentration; Behavior; Ability to form and be in relationships; Ability to function in school or on the job.
Are you suffering from a medical condition? Are you impacted socially, educationally, vocationally, relationship-wise, financially, and in any other ways? Upon diagnosis with a medical problem, either as the result of an accident or an illness, you may experience medical trauma. Being in a hospital or other medical setting and receiving the news that you have a sudden medical condition often causes a traumatic reaction. This trauma needs to be treated. After processing the trauma, you are left with multiple issues in order to reach optimal functioning in dealing with the medical problem.
Have you ever been the victim of a terror attack? Or have you ever been a witness to a terror attack? This trauma is one of the most difficult from which to recover. There is great fear: The terrorist meant to murder you. There is the feeling of helplessness. Often there are thoughts of what you might have done to prevent the attack. Frequently there are disturbances of sleep, of appetite, moods, memory and concentration, behavior, relationships, and functioning in school or on the job. The terror attack trauma usually causes intense anxiety including: A need to avoid thinking about the event; A need to avoid going anywhere that might remind one of the event; A need to avoid talking about it. Avoidance begins to rule your life. And any deviation from this avoidance causes you great anxiety. And flashbacks make you feel as if you are reliving the experience.
Are you a veteran of military actions that have left you traumatized? Do you have flashbacks, nightmares, anxiety, problems in relationships, with appetite, with mood? Many of these issues are common in this type of trauma. You avoid everything that can remind you of the traumatic events. There are flashbacks, in which you feel as if you are reliving the experience.
